Acolytes & Crucifers

Young men and women of St. James bring their dedication and service to light as acolytes and crucifers. The Crucifers carry the processional cross and the acolytes light and extinguish the chancel candles and serve the rector at the alter during Holy Communion. Altar Guild

The Altar Guild takes charge of dressing the altar for regular and special services held at St. James taking time to make the altar beautiful and reverent. They take care of the altar flowers and make sure the elements are prepared for Holy Communion. Flowers are sent to the sick and hospitalized following the services. Choir

The Choir leads the congregation in the singing of hymns and service music and provides inspiration with a weekly anthem during the offertory and an annual Christmas program on Christmas eve just prior to midnight mass. The Choir is open to any adult or teen who wishes to join and normally practices on Wednesday nights at 7:30 PM from September through June. (return to ministry opportunity selections)

Episcopal Church Women

The ECW at St. James meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 11:00 AM. Bazaars, parish dinners, donations to the Shelter for Abused Women and Children, cook books and special celebrations make up some of the many activities of these women who gather together for fun, worship and service. Internet Home Page

St. James Home Page provides essential information about St. James, our weekly calendar of events, schedules, the current prayer list as well as links to many other Christian resources available on the internet. Associate webmasters are needed to maintain the page and keep it up to date and current. (return to ministry opportunity selections)

Lay Readers & Chalicists

Men, women and youth take part as lay readers during our services as an activity to make the entire congregation feel more involved in the service by reading lessons, psalms and prayers. Chalicists assist the rector by serving the wine during Holy Communion. (return to ministry opportunity selections)

"Little Church" Social Club

An innovative outreach program at St. James that meets in the parish hall on the second and fourth Wednesday nights at 6:45 PM to provide a social setting for adults who are physically and mentally challenged. (return to ministry opportunity selections)

Pantry Collection

St. James has an ongoing pantry collection which goes to the Presbyterian Community center on Jamison Avenue in Roanoke. This is the site chosen by Roanoke Area Ministries for our offering. We collect food, clothing and reading materials. Help us feed the hungry and clothe the needy. (return to ministry opportunity selections)

Ushers

The ushers of St. James greet worshipers as they enter the church handing out bulletins and helping newcomers find seats. Ushers assist with the offertory and help keep an orderly flow during Holy Communion. (return to ministry opportunity selections)
